Changan establish RND for centre in the US for chassis work

20 January 2011 - The Chongqing Changan Automobile Company will establish its presence in America by opening a research center in Detroit, Michigan. Changan will become the first Chinese automobile company to establish such a center in the US, marking further development of the Chinese automobile industry tapping into foreign sources.

Changan's US venture will focus on chassis research, design, development and construction. The fruits of its research will primarily be applied to upcoming mid- and high-grade sedans and multi-purpose SUVs.

Chassis design is the core of automobile technology. It is also one of the hardest to grasp aspects. By opening a research center overseas, Changan hopes to takes advantage of international talent. "Establishing the US research center will supply Changan Motors with international automobile science and technology and will be an important driving force in improving the global automobile industry," said company CEO Xu Liuping.

Changan has previously opened research centers overseas in Turin, Yokohama and Nottingham, England, specializing in exterior design, interior design and engine/transmission, respectively. The company also has domestic centers in Chongqing, Shanghai and Beijing, as well as in Heilongjiang and Jiangxi provinces. With the establishment of its American center, Changan will fulfill its goal of having a research and development system with nine locations spanning five countries, with each location specializing in a particular domain.

Detroit is the heart of the automotive industry in the US, with the 'Big Three' companies' headquarters all based there. Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai and other famous international corporations also have technology centers located in the city.

While Changan has a three-way joint venture with Ford and Mazda, as well as a partnership with PSA Peugeot Citroen, it is also spending heavily to upgrade its vehicle technology. Late last year, it said it would be pumping in more than US$600 mil to conduct R&D for its own brands, as well as develop small engines and expand its minivan production.
